The impressive yet upsetting Smash career of Sonix

Super Smash Bros. Melee content creator Andrew Nestico loves pointing out interesting patterns and insights based on statistics from the pro scene. Recently, Nestico pointed out that Carlos “Sonix” Perez has never won a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Major despite coming very close multiple times.

In fact, Sonix has made it to a Grand Final 10 times out of the past 15 Majors he’s competed in. Unfortunately, he’s fallen short every time he’s made it to the Grand Final. This has resulted in a lot of second-place finishes.

Some of Sonix’s second-place Major finishes include Luminosity Make BIG Moves against Gavin “Tweek” Dempsey, who he also lost to at Get On My Level X and Luminosity Make Moves Miami, Supernova 2024 against prodigy Edgar “Sparg0” Valdez, who also beat him at Get On My Level: Forever, and most recently Leonardo “MkLeo” Perez, who is having a bit of a comeback streak. He also flew to Japan for KOWLOON #16, losing to Angel “Onin” Mireles in the finals.

Sonix is no slouch, either. Out of those 10 Grand Finals, Sonix was able to reset the bracket six times. This means that he won the first best-of-five after climbing to the Finals from Losers, forcing a second best-of-five match to determine the Grand Finals.

The FGC has a few theories as to what has held Sonix back. As a Sonic main, one fan wondered if his matches just lasted too long due to the character’s avoidant playstyle, causing him to run out of steam by the Grand Finals. Another wondered if he was maybe not switching up his gameplay enough, allowing his opponents to catch on and read him too easily.

While this could be seen as a curse, one fan pointed out how Sonix has never complained (despite johns being very common in the Smash scene), leading many to believe he has the right mindset to get a Major win soon.

Sonix is considered the best Ultimate player from the Dominican Republic. He also may be the best Sonic player in the world right now. His consistency at events the past few years has landed him in the Top 10 of the LumiRank 2025. He’s held his position for multiple years, showing he has what it takes to be near the top consistently. But can he claim that top spot? He’s won Majors in the past, but can he take down the best of 2025?
