“You shouldn’t have called out to her. It’s what she wants.” A24 has unveiled an official trailer for the indie horror film called undertone, also known as The Undertone, now set for release in US theaters in March. This creepy audio horror thriller first premiered at the 2025 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal last summer because it’s a Canadian film. It’s next playing at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival this month in their iconic Midnight section before hitting theaters in a few months. A podcast host covering spooky content moves in to care for her dying mother. When she’s sent recordings of a pregnant couple’s paranormal encounters, she discovers their story parallels hers, each tape pushing her toward madness. “It wants to be heard!” Well that’s frightening! From writer and director Ian Tuason, undertone stars Nina Kiri, Kris Holden-Ried, Michèle Duquet, Keana Lyn Bastidasand, Sarah Beaudin, Seled Calderon, and Adam DiMarco. Evy is the only character to be shown on-screen in the film. All other characters are heard only as off-screen voices, thus conveying the film’s horror through its sound design. Goodness this looks insanely scary! Wow.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Ian Tuason’s horror film undertone, direct from A24’s YouTube:

Strained by the responsibility of having to care for her dying mother, Evy (Nina Kiri) seeks respite from the loneliness of her fragmented reality. Now living in a house full of keepsakes & memories, her sanity and structure lies within her work on a supernatural podcast, The Undertone. While she usually plays skeptic to the creepy (and often disturbing) audio files sent to her by co-host Justin (Adam DiMarco) for podcast fodder, the latest submission hits differently. A series of 10 recordings from a young pregnant couple are unfurled one by one, each more ominous than the last. As Evy draws parallels to her current plight, hidden messages manifest, pushing her further toward madness. The Undertone, also known as just undertone, is written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Ian Tuason, making his first feature film after directing The Occurrence on Hollow Road and a few other short previously. Produced by Cody Calahan and Dan Slater. This first premiered at the 2025 Fantasia Film Festival and shows at Sundance next. A24 debuts Tuason’s undertone in select US theaters starting March 13th, 2026 coming up. Who’s intrigued?
