William Shatner addresses calls for him to take over Star Trek franchise

William Shatner has responded publicly to suggestions that he should be given creative control of the Star Trek franchise. This comes after criticism of Paramount+’s upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy gained traction online.

The debate began when White House deputy chief of staff for policy Stephen Miller reposted a clip from Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. He even labeled it “tragic.” Miller went on to argue that the science fiction franchise could still be saved if Paramount reconciled with Shatner and granted him full creative authority over its future direction.

Shatner, best known for originating the role of Captain James T. Kirk, responded publicly to Miller’s post. The 94-year-old actor mocked the criticism and offered a sarcastic reply. “I am so on the same page with you @StephenM!” Shatner wrote, before focusing on the clip’s depiction of Holly Hunter’s character wearing glasses. “The fact that they have not cured Hyperopia by the 32rd Century is an abysmal oversight on the writers!” he added.

Shatner also joked about the show’s production choices. He wrote, “Also @paramountplus needs to up the budget because I’m sure that a well oiled organization like Starfleet in the distant future could afford more than one pair of glasses for at least this hyperopic bridge crew.” He concluded the post by sarcastically writing, “I am ready to assume command of the series! Call me!”

Miller responded again after Shatner’s remarks, reiterating his view that “Paramount screwed up.” He argued that it was still possible for the studio to “make amends with Shatner and save the franchise.” Neither Shatner nor Paramount+ has indicated any plans for the actor to take on a creative role.
